Beavers Bend Folk Festival

One of the biggest events of the year for the Beavers Bend area is quickly approaching.

The Beavers Bend Folk and Craft Show is November 13th, 14th and 15th.  With the change of seasons and beautiful fall foliage, this is a great time to visit the area.  This is the 22nd year for the festival, with thousands attending to enjoy arts and crafts, live music, great food and plenty of activities for the children.

This event will take you back to a simpler time, where people actually socialized together, before electronics controlled our lives.  Take a weekend to get away from phones and computers and enjoy the beauty of nature and a culture of "old-time" entertainment and food.

Kiamichi Owa-Chito Movedto Broken Bow City Park

Kiamichi Owa-Chito will be moving to Broken Bow City Park. Parking passes and sponsorship are still being sold. We are truly sad not to be able to have this year’s festival at Beavers Bend State Park. Many locations all over the country were considered in the decision making process. And on such short notice the Broken Bow City Park was the best choice.

Beavers Bend and Broken Bow Lake Conditions

Beavers Bend State Park is officially closed as are all boat ramps to Broken Bow Lake.  The release of an unprecedented amounts of water from Broken Bow Lake has caused flooding along the Mountain Fork river.  This flooding has impacted public water supply, which has caused some businesses and cabins to temporarily close.

Castlewood Trails has not been affected by the recent floods.  Due to use of a water well, rather than public water supply, water at the cabin is unaffected and the cabin is open for business.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those in Oklahoma and surrounding states that have been impacted by the recent floods.

2013 Master’s at Work: Woodturning Competition (Sept. 13th/14th)

The Forest Heritage Center Museum and Oklahoma Forestry Services, a division of the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry will kick-off the annual fall exhibit, “Masters at Work” with a competitive flair. The turning competition will be held September 13th – 14th, 2013 in the courtyard of the Museum. Artists will arrive with a piece of wood, their lathe and tools and let their creativity take over as they turn the wood into a beautiful work of art for the Beads of Courage Program.

After an intensive selection process that encompassed woodturners from Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Tennessee and Missouri, demonstrators have been chosen to compete in the Master’s at Work: Woodturning Competition. These demonstrators will participate in four different “turn-offs” and multiple workshops creating an immense wood “shaving” match worth viewing.

While partnering with the Beads of Courage Program, our demonstrators will provide arts in medicine for children with serious illnesses while designing and turning four different types of boxes. The Beads of Courage Program is designed to support and strengthen children and families coping with serious illness. Through the program, children tell their story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their unique treatment path. The turnings created by the competitors will be presented to the children as a safe-keeping treasure box for their beads. As an added bonus, one child from the Oklahoma City program will be a judge for the competition.

“The Forest Heritage Center has been working diligently towards increasing awareness of woodturning as an art form. By implementing a competitive twist while working with the Bead of Courage Program, we hope to bring the art form to an even greater level,” said Doug Zook, FHC program director.

The Southeast Oklahoma Woodturners will also sponsor two special contests at 2:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. A woodturning project chosen at random will be announced for members of the American Association of Woodturners to participate in. Additional prize money will be awarded each day for these winners.

This year's woodturning competition will also coincide with a Basket Making Workshop and an Art Retreat & Outdoor Painting Workshop: "Capturing Nature's Beauty," giving visitors and participants the chance to watch some serious lathe wrangling in between brush strokes. “Capturing Nature’s Beauty” is available for adult beginners or advanced painters on Friday & Saturday. For more information visit www.artlessonswithjamie.com or call Jamie Carter at 903-674-2018 to register.

Experienced basket maker, Linda Lou Alexander will be providing a workshop to teach her famed basket weaving skills. The workshops will be held at the Forest Heritage Center Museum on Friday, September 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 14th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Two different types of baskets will be offered. For $10 guests can choose to make a Double Wall Western Cherokee Basket or for $15 you can make a Pine Needle Coiled Basket. There’s no need to register for this workshop; just come as you are. It’s a workshop for people of all ages with supplies provided.

All this will take place as gallery visitors seize the opportunity to interact with the artists as they compete. When the bell tolls, signaling the competition is over, judges will evaluate the techniques, artistry and craftsmanship to award the prestigious blue ribbon to the winning artists on Sunday, September 15th , 2013 at 1:00 p.m. during the opening reception. The turnings created during the competition will be added to the Forest Heritage Center’s permanent wood art collection and be on display until October 20th in the Wood Art Gallery.

In addition, each demonstrator’s represented club will have numerous woodturnings displayed in the wood art gallery and many of the artists will be on hand sharing their turning techniques and tricks of the trade. This is an excellent opportunity for the public to gain first-hand knowledge about woodturning from some of the region’s most talented woodturners.

"As the Wood Art Capital of Oklahoma, the Forest Heritage Center Museum makes a perfect venue for this type of art experience," stated Doug Zook, FHC Museum director."This should be an exciting weekend for all ages while showcasing the unique form of wood art."

This exhibit is made possible in part by Oklahoma Forestry Services, Oklahoma Arts Council and the Forest Heritage Center Advisory Board and staff.

Exhibit Open to the Public: September 13th - October 20th,
Gallery Hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. & Sunday 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m

Off-Season is a Great Time at Beavers Bend!

Summer is ending and time for many to head back to school.  With the Beavers Bend area being such a popular family destination, the off-season begins in September after Labor Day.

If you have flexibility in your schedule, the off-season is a great time to take advantage of smaller crowds in the area.

With school just getting back in swing, September is one of the slower months of the year.  Weekends will often book, but the weekdays in September is a great time to get away if you're looking for a little seclusion.

Beavers Bend comes alive again in October with the cooler weather and fall foliage.  Late October is typically a great time to visit to see the beauty that is created from the changing seasons.

November, could be one of the best months to visit the area.  The air is crisp, but not too cold to get out and enjoy a hike, bike ride, golf outing, and other outdoor activitites.  The holidays are also a good time to visit.  Castlewood Trails is decorated for the holidays to help you celebrate with true holiday spirit.

If you are lucky enough to be in the area during a January or February snow, it's an experience that you'll never forget.

So, don't think that Beavers Bend is only a summer-time destination.  It may be that the best time to visit, is when the days are cooler and when others are at home!

Burn Ban Lifted in McCurtain County

As of September 17, 2012, the burn ban has been lifted for McCurtain County.  This includes the Beavers Bend and Broken Bow areas.

Although the burn ban has been lifted for McCurtain County, there are still 55 counties in Oklahoma where the burn ban is still in effect.

Please be careful when lighting fires, whether it is for cooking out in a contained grill, or building a fire in your cabin's firepit area.  Fires can always create a dangerous situation and should be monitored closely.

The following tips for maintaining and extinguishing a campfire are provided by SmokeyBear.com.

Maintaining Your Campfire
  1. Once you have a strong fire going, add larger pieces of dry wood to keep it burning steadily
  2. Keep your fire to a manageable size
  3. Make sure children and pets are supervised when near the fire
  4. Never leave your campfire unattended
  5. Never cut live trees or branches from live trees
 Extinguishing Your Campfire
  1. Allow the wood to burn completely to ash, if possible
  2. Pour lots of water on the fire, drown ALL embers, not just the red ones
  3. Pour until hissing sound stops
  4. Stir the campfire ashes and embers with a shovel
  5. Scrape the sticks and logs to remove any embers
  6. Stir and make sure everything is wet and they are cold to the touch
  7. If you do not have water, use dirt. Mix enough dirt or sand with the embers. Continue adding and stirring until all material is cool. Remember: do NOT bury the fire as the fire will continue to smolder and could catch roots on fire that will eventually get to the surface and start a wildfire.
REMEMBER:
  • If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave!
  • Don't burn dangerous things!
  • never burn aerosol cans or pressurized containers. They may explode.
  • never put glass in the fire pit. Glass does not melt away, it only heats up and shatters. Broken slivers of glass are dangerous.
  • aluminum cans do not burn. In fact, the aluminum only breaks down into smaller pieces. Inhaling aluminum dust can be harmful to your lungs.

Broken Bow Burn Ban

As of August 3, 2012 all of Oklahoma has a burn ban in effect. For detailed information go to: http://www.forestry.ok.gov/burn-ban-information

Two basic principles apply: 1. Individuals are responsible for their actions and the results of their activities; and 2. Reasonable caution must be exercised with respect to the existing high fire danger and extra precautionary measures must be taken to prevent wildfires.

CAMPFIRES AND OUTDOOR COOKING Outdoor campfires or bonfires are prohibited. LPG and natural gas grills and charcoal-fired cooking outside in a grilling receptacle are permitted provided that the activity is conducted over a non-flammable surface and at least five feet from flammable vegetation. Coleman-type pressurized stoves are exempt. However, any fire resulting from grilling or the use of one of these cookers or stoves is still an illegal fire.

FIREWORKS Organized public fireworks displays are allowed under this ban if the public fireworks displays are permitted by a municipality with jurisdictional authority and conducted by trained professionals with approval of the local fire department or State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Tip 4 on Choosing a Vacation Rental Property

Kid Friendly???

Taking a vacation with younger kids is exciting and can create memories that children will keep for a lifetime. As adults, we often plan our vacations with activities and events that we know our kids will enjoy.

However, as adults, we also want our "down time". And usually, the kids are still ready to go, when all we want to do is relax.

If you're traveling with children, you should consider finding a rental property that has special amenities for them. They will appreciate it, and you will appreciate the time that it will allow you to relax.

Consider indoor and outdoor activities. The ages of your children and the whether will typically determine where kids spend their time. If the weather causes the family to remain indoors, do the kids have options to stay entertained. If playing outdoors, is there plenty of room for them to run freely, are there special offerings that are kid-oriented, and what is the traffic in the area? These are items that should be considered when selecting your next vacation rental.

At Castlewood Trails, we have tried to ensure that your kids will enjoy their stay as much as you do. The cabin has an upstairs loft that is an excellent area that kids love. Available to them is a foosball table, television with cable (including Disney and Nickelodeon) as well as a DVD player and VCR.

Your kids will LOVE the outdoors at Castlewood Trails. There is plenty of room for them to run until they drop, and traffic is very minimal. We have a private hiking trail for exploring, a horse tire-swing for the younger kids, horseshoes and a hottub. But most kids choose to spend much of their time in the 8' x 10', log siding, treehouse. It's an excellent place for them to get away and create their own fun!
Your time at Beavers Bend is a time you will always remember. Make it a little extra special for your kids, because when vacations are over, the memories are what they will keep for a lifetime.

Tip 3 on Choosing a Vacation Rental Property

Weekday vs Weekend Rentals...

If you have the capability of being flexible on when you visit Beavers Bend, you'll find greater rental availability during weekdays. Regardless of whether it is during the busy season, or during the off-season.

If you don't have school schedules to work around and have flexibility with work, choosing to visit during the week rather than the weekend, is an excellent option.

Not only will you have a greater availability in rental options, but since most cabins cost less during the week, you should be able to save money. However, holidays are often charged at a weekend rate. Also, don't assume that weekday rates are less, as some rentals charge a standard rate regardless of the days of the week.

The off-season (November - February) is a great time for a getaway to Beavers Bend. Overall, temperatures during this time are comfortable for day hikes and exploring the region. Although the nights can become a bit chilly, relaxing indoors by a nice wood-burning fire just can't be beat. Not all cabins provide firewood, so be sure to ask before you arrive.

If you plan on visiting during the summer, spring break, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas, you should make your reservations as early as possible. These are all very popular times at Beavers Bend. The longer you wait, the greater chance you have in losing that perfect vacation lodging.

Planning ahead will help ensure you get with you want, rather than having to choose from a limited selection of properties.

Castlewood Trails provides discounted weekday rates throughout the year.

In addition to providing off-season discounts from our regular rates, Castlewood Trails also has discount packages (November - February) that give you a free night OR TWO with your rental. Please see our Special Discounts page for details.

Tip 2 on Choosing a Vacation Property

Rental Accommodations...
There are hundreds rental cabins in the Beavers Bend area, and it can be overwhelming to try to find the right one that fits your specific needs. It can take several hours of searching the internet, and there's still a good chance that you won't see all that is out there.

Before you begin your search, have a good idea of the number of bedrooms you need. But be aware that the more bedrooms, the higher the price. Sometimes, smaller cabins may have various sleeping arrangements that will allow you to rent a cabin with fewer bedrooms, but still give you what you need. Using sleeper sofas for kids in a loft area or living area is an excellent way to cut costs.

Also, there are cabins designed for the fisherman or hunter in mind, and there are those designed for family vacations. Many of the newer cabins offer luxury accommodations, providing most everything you need. Cabin amenities become much more important when it's a family vacation. Be sure to ask about the amenities. On-line pictures of each cabin should give you a good feel for what you are getting, however, pictures may not give you a good idea of the outdoor environment. It's nice to have plenty of seating under covered porches for those times that it rains.

If there are any special accommodations that you may need, be sure to address that before you make your reservation. Also, if you have kids, ask about any kid-specific entertainment that may be available. So be sure to ask any specific questions you may have.

Castlewood Trails is a 1,600 sq. ft., two-bedroom, two-bath luxury rental property. It is the perfect size for one family, or for two families of 8 or 9. In addition to king and queen sized beds, there is a sleeper sofa located in the upstairs loft and an additional sleeper/sofa in the guest bedroom.

The cabin contains all the amenities needed to make your stay enjoyable. Upgraded amenities include: stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops, free wifi, kids tree house and a private hiking trail. Castlewood Trails also has a hot tub and fire pit.

While rental rates have increased over the past couple of years, we have tried to maintain a more affordable rate for Castlewood Trails, allowing you to enjoy a luxurious cabin at a more affordable rate.

Tip 1 on Choosing a Vacation Property

Over the next few weeks, we will be providing information that may be helpful to you when selecting a rental property for your next vacation to the Beavers Bend / Broken Bow area. So check back for more information.

Location…
One of the most important considerations is to find a location that best suits you. There are many options in the area, so be sure to ask about the area before renting.

First, you should think about what are envisioning with your cabin rental. The last thing you want, is to arrive and immediately be disappointed in the location.

Do you want total isolation or are you looking for a place where you know there are others in the area. Some rentals are extremely remote, some are very close to other rentals, while others give you space and privacy, but do not isolate you from everything.

There are also areas of rental that are just off the main highway, and others that take you away from main roads but still have quick access. So consider your surroundings.

Visitors may also want to consider the terrain. Some areas are flat, while others offer a more mountainous feel.

There are rentals that are extremely convenient to Beavers Bend State Park, while others are closer to Broken Bow Lake. However, the area is not overwhelming, so most rentals are within 5 – 10 minutes of most activities.

Since much of your vacation with be spent at your cabin (as well as most of your expense), you want to make sure that your location is exactly what you want.

Castlewood Trails is located about 5 minutes south of Beavers Bend State Park and is not located on the main road, but rather aprox ½ mile off 259A. It is in the Southern Hills area and offers privacy, but is not isolated. As the name would indicate, Southern Hills is not flat, but has some terrain and elevation. It is typically considered one of the more desirable locations in the area.
